Hutovo blato

Nature Park “Hutovo blato” is founded in 1995. It is located in southeast Herzegovina, on the left side of river Neretva on the territory of municipality of Čapljina and Stolac. It occupies area of 7411 ha. It is considered to be one of the largest bird winter resort for in Europe. International Council for Protection of Birds (ICBP) enlisted “Hutovo blato” to the list of internationally important bird habitat in 1998. Afterward in 2001, nature Park “Hutovo blato” becomes enlisted to the list of swamps of international importance according to the methodology of Ramarsk convention and registered to the UNESCO's Directorate in Paris Manifestations.

In the 15th century, the Kosača family ruled the area of Hum (Herzegovina) and was one of the most powerful noble families in the Kingdom of Bosnia. There are assumptions that the family was named after the village of Kosač near the Piva and Tara river. The influence and power of Kosača can be seen during the time of the first Bosnian king Tvrtko I.
