U 15. stoljeću obitelj Kosača vladala je područjem Huma (Hercegovina) i bila je jedna od najmoćnijih plemićkih obitelji u Kraljevini Bosni. Postoje pretpostavke da je obitelj dobila ime po selu Kosač u blizini rijeka Pive i Tare. Utjecaj i moć Kosače mogu se vidjeti za vrijeme prvog bosanskog kralja Tvrtka I.
